For this year’s film toast, Oppenheimer was the honoree at a celeb-packed house party co-hosted by Saint Laurent and NBCUniversal. Up in the Los Feliz hills, just minutes from where Sunday’s big event will take place, the John Lautner-designed home of Mitch Glazer and Kelly Lynch was the perfect mid-century backdrop for the chic soiree. The evening began with an intimate dinner party for the French house’s fans like Zoë Kravitz, Channing Tatum, and Hailey Bieber, as well as Oppenheimer stars like Cillian Murphy, Casey Affleck, Josh Hartnett, and Robert Downey Jr. Vanity Fair’s Radhika Jones, Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vacarello, and Universal’s Dame Donna Langley were also anchoring the dinner.

HOLLYWOOD actor Josh Hartnett has married his long-term partner St Trinian’s actress Tamsin Egerton in a secret wedding ceremony.

The Pearl Harbour and Black Hawk Down heartthrob, 43, wed the blonde British star, 33, in an intimate ceremony at The Old Marylebone Town Hall, in London.

The loved-up couple, who started dating a decade ago, quietly tied the knot last November, on Guy Fawkes Night, in the stunning Soho Room, which seats just 12 people.

The pair first became an item after meeting on-set of the straight-to-DVD flop The Lovers, which was later named Time Traveller, and live in rural Dorset.

A close pal said: “They’re as smitten as ever and wanted to make it official in a low-key affair. It was a classy ceremony with only a handful of close family and friends.

"They're really happy living a low-key life away from showbiz parties and red-carpets so are happy to fly under the radar.”

Speaking about walking down the aisle four years ago Tamsin said: “Marriage is something that’s going to happen, but we’re focusing on children at the moment.

“The kids are very young - one just turned one and the other one is two-and-half.”

Following up his extraordinary, Oscar-nominated James Baldwin documentary I Am Not Your Negro, director Raoul Peck is returning with an ambitious, four-part series premiering on HBO. Set to premiere over two nights on April 7 and 8, Exterminate All the Brutes takes a visually arresting journey through time, into the darkest hours of humanity. Through his personal voyage, Peck deconstructs the making and masking of history, digging deep into the exploitative and genocidal aspects of European colonialism––from America to Africa and its impact on society today––challenging the audience to re-think the very notion of how history is being written.

With scripted portions led by Josh Hartnett, the film also utilizes documentary, archival, and animation footage, exploring the 12th century Crusades through the presidency of Donald Trump. “As writers, creators, filmmakers we have no choice but to try and reflect our societies and give some sort of analysis of them the best way we can,” says Raoul Peck. “And as artists, we need to break the limits of our art.”

Based on three works by authors and scholars––Sven Lindqvist’s “Exterminate All the Brutes,” Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz’s “An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States” and Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s “Silencing the Past”––the series revisits and reframes the profound meaning of the Native American genocide and American slavery, and their fundamental implications for our present.

Part 1
Debut date: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT)
In the series premiere, “The Disturbing Confidence of Ignorance,” filmmaker Raoul Peck sets out to illuminate the intertwined currents of hate and bigotry running through history. Focusing on the United States’ legacy as a colonial power, Peck explores how race first became institutionalized, the Nazi program of “elimination” and its antecedents in the West, and the looting of the African continent in a “gentlemen’s agreement.”

Part 2
Debut date: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Peck revisits the stories of Christopher Columbus, the Alamo, and the Trail of Tears from an indigenous perspective in the second episode, “Who the F*** is Columbus.” He shows how “official” history is shaped by those in power and solidified by myth and popular culture. Next, he examines the “doctrine of discovery” used to justify the enslavement of millions of Africans and questions his own story within these narratives.

Part 3
Debut date: THURSDAY, APRIL 8 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT)
In the third installment of the series, “Killing at a Distance or… How I Thoroughly Enjoyed the Outing,” Peck looks back at human migration, trade, and weaponry, and shows how Europeans used industrialized steel to conduct warfare from ever-greater distances. Then, he explores the endless cycle of militarization throughout the centuries – from George Washington’s efforts to jumpstart American arms manufacturing, to the Monroe Doctrine, and finally, to the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Part 4
Debut date: THURSDAY, APRIL 8 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)
In the series finale, “The Bright Colors of Fascism,” Peck explores the challenge of reconciling America’s true history with its ideals of freedom and democracy, pointing to the struggle for native representation and the legacy of slavery in institutionalized racism today. Reflecting on his time in Berlin, Peck links the modern resurgence of white nationalism with fascism, slavery, colonialism, and Nazism

Exterminate All The Brutes by acclaimed filmmaker Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro, HBO’s Sometimes in April), is a four-part series that pushes the boundaries of traditional documentary filmmaking, offering an expansive exploration of the exploitative and genocidal aspects of European colonialism, from America to Africa and its impact on society today. The series will debut on HBO with two back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, April 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with the final two episodes, airing back-to-back Thursday, April 8 at the same time. All four episodes of the series will be available to stream on HBO Max on April 7 to coincide with the linear premiere. The film’s HBO debut date coincides with the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda.

Peck will participate in a discussion with Tabitha Jackson, Festival Director, at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival as part of their Big Conversation series on January 29. The conversation, titled The Past In the Present: A Personal Journey through Race, History and Filmmaking, will explore Peck’s work and the timely themes illuminated in Exterminate All The Brutes, using clips from the series to guide the conversation.

A journey in time, Exterminate All The Brutes is a filmmaker’s personal voyage into the darkest hours of humanity, in which Peck deconstructs the making and masking of history, digging deep into European white supremacy’s ideology. Peck challenges the audience to re-think the very notion of how history is being written.

The series is based on three works by authors and scholars – Sven Lindqvist’s Exterminate All The Brutes, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz’s An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States, and Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s Silencing the Past – Exterminate All The Brutes revisits and reframes the profound meaning of the Native American genocide and American slavery, and their fundamental implications for our present.

The series artfully weaves together rich documentary footage and archival material, as well as dynamic animation and interpretive scripted scenes and aims to tell a sweeping story in which history, contemporary life and fiction are wholly intertwined. Peck meticulously disrupts formal and artistic film conventions, freely weaving together scripted and unscripted content.

Josh Hartnett is an American actor who has had an impressive career in film and television since he first began in the late 90s. Hartnett has appeared in a number of film and television series across multiple genres. He starred in period war films such as Pearl Harbor and Back Hawk Down. From 2014-2016, Hartnett starred in the British American gothic horror series Penny Dreadful as Ethan Chandler, aka Lawrence Talbot, The Wolfman. Hartnett is no stranger to period pieces, so he could be an excellent fit for the film especially as he would be recognizable to not only American, but UK audiences as well.

Fans of the Crawley family and their employees are eagerly awaiting more even ten years after the series’ first premiered. Not much is known about the plot of Downton Abbey 2, but The Daily Mail has reported that a number of the original cast members will return, as will Imelda Staunton and Tuppence Middleton who were introduced in the first film. Perhaps the most surprising return is the acclaimed Dame Maggie Smith whose character, Violet Crawley, told her granddaughter Lady Mary, played by Michelle Dockery, at the end of the first film that she was sick and “may not have long to live”. Maggie Smith has agreed to return one last time for the sequel film much to fans delight.

Downton Abbey follows not only the aristocratic Crawley family that owns the estate, but their domestic help as well. Downton Abbey was a British historical drama series, created by Julian Fellowes, that ran from 2010-2015. Set during the early 20th century the series follows the residents of the fictional Downton Abbey estate. The series ended in 2015, but a follow up film was released in 2019 which exceeded all expectations grossing over $194 million worldwide and topped the United States box office on its opening weekend. JOSH HARTNETT OFFERED ROLE IN DOWNTON ABBEY 2 After the massive success of the first film it’s no surprise that a sequel was coming. While not much is known about the plot, we here at The Illuminerdi have exciting news regarding casting for Downton Abbey 2. An offer has been made to the actor Josh Hartnett. Hartnett has been offered the role “Movie Star”. The character is described as a featured character in his 40s. It looks like they are looking for an “actual American movie star” that will stun unsuspecting viewers. josh-hartnett-penny-dreadful Josh Hartnett is an American actor who has had an impressive career in film and television since he first began in the late 90s. Hartnett is no stranger to period pieces, so he could be an excellent fit for the film especially as he would be recognizable to not only American, but UK audiences as well. downton-abbey-maggie-smith Fans of the Crawley family and their employees are eagerly awaiting more even ten years after the series’ first premiered. The series takes place during the years 1912-1926 and covers real world events like the sinking of the Titanic, the start of World War I, the outbreak of the Spanish Flu, and more. Audiences all over the world became enthralled with the series and the residents of Downton Abbey.

He explains why he had to leave Hollywood – and what he knew about Harvey Weinstein

Josh Hartnett is sitting at home in Surrey, thinking about the time he was asked to play Superman. “I had this idea that because he lives in this world where he can’t touch anything without it flying across the room, he has become almost afraid of himself and his own power. He doesn’t know how to be Superman any more. He’s so afraid, he has become almost neutered by the experience of living on Earth, where he can blow things up just by looking at them.”

The studio demurred – “They didn’t really want a fear-based character at the centre of their movie,” he says wryly – and Hartnett walked away. But his Superman concept now feels like a metaphor for what was happening at the time in his own life, as he became increasingly overwhelmed, even horrified, by his status and the hysteria that surrounded it. Twenty years ago, the hottest young male actors in Hollywood were Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck – and Hartnett. Michael Bay, who directed him in Pearl Harbor, put it bluntly: “He’s going to be fucking huge.” The actor grimaces at the mention of that. “Huge was never something I aspired to,” he says.

Back then, he seemed like a pretty kid who had got in over his head. Now 42, he has acquired the squinting, quizzical handsomeness of Richard Gere. He and his wife, the British actor Tamsin Egerton, moved to Surrey with their two young children to be closer to her parents, he explains. “And then, of course, coronavirus ...” In other words, they’re not going anywhere. So he has time to talk and a new film to talk about: the factually based thriller Target Number One, which is better than any of its plucked-from-a-hat titles (it has also been known as Gut Instinct and Most Wanted) might suggest.

From writer/director Daniel Roby and inspiredby a true story, the indie drama Most Wanted tells the story of investigative journalist Victor Malarek (Josh Hartnett), as he unravels a case of entrapment, in which Daniel Léger (Antoine-Olivier Pilon) was forced into a drug deal and then sentenced to 100 years in a Thai prison for it. While Victor must unravel the conspiracy and fight for Daniel’s freedom, his drive to uncover crooks that abuse innocent victims that are forgotten by society puts him in a dangerous position that puts his family at risk.

During this 1-on-1 phone interview with Collider, actor Josh Hartnett talked about the appeal of this project, why he identified with the dilemma that his character faces, what he learned from meeting the real Victor, and the experience of working with filmmaker Daniel Roby on set. He also talked about what he loved about working with Guy Ritchie on the action flick Cash Truck, why the Spectrum Originals series Paradise Lost didn’t turn out as he expected, shooting Exterminate All the Brutes in Paris, and getting more into writing scripts to produce.

Collider: I found this story really fascinating. When you read this, what was it about the story and characters that most stuck with you?

JOSH HARTNETT: The structure of the story is something that (writer/director) Daniel [Roby] found in the script, but it wasn’t quite as tight as it is now, in the edit. To me, it seemed like an obvious solution to ending up with a character that you know more than, which would, more or less, stop the film in its tracks. So, I think he did a really good job of weaving these three stories together, in a way that felt like you were current with the characters. That’s a great element of the film and a great element to the filmmaking. But the thing that got me was that I felt, initially, that the story was great and I understood where this journalist was coming from. I wanted to see him succeed, wanted to believe in him, and thought of him as heroic and larger than life, but I also liked the conflict that he was having and I wanted to know more about that. Honestly, I had just found out that I was gonna have my first child and was wondering how that was gonna affect me, as a dad, as an actor and just in my life, so I felt his dilemma, on a personal level. And then, I met and spoke to Daniel, who directed it, and his passion for the film was overt and palpable, and I always wanna work with directors who are passionate and want to be as involved with as many projects as I can be, that are the director’s passion project. He’d been working on this for eight years, before we even met, so I knew that he needed to tell the story. And then, he invited me up to Toronto to meet Victor, and Daniel, Victor and I spent the day together. I was compelled by Victor as a person, as well. There was a lot going for it. I just believed that Daniel would be able to make something spectacular. Even though he didn’t have the budget that he would have liked to have had, he has a lot of ingenuity and he’s a smart guy, and he really understands filmmaking. I just knew he was gonna be able to pull this off.

Were there things that meeting the real guy did for you, as far as finding this character, that you wouldn’t have necessarily known or done, if you hadn’t met him?

HARTNETT: Yes, there was one thing, actually, that really helped me, in getting into the character, which was that Victor comes across, in his filmed interviews and in his books, as someone who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. It’s a very grandstandy, larger than life character, and what I really learned from meeting him was that, behind all of that, he’s a very soft character with a soft touch. He’s dedicated to his family and there’s a central humanity to him that drives that larger than life aspect of his character. I was way more way more drawn to the character, at that point, because it was not just a two-dimensional character.

With something like this, where it sounds like you signed on because you really believed in the director, what was it like, actually getting on set with him? What were your conversations like, during the shoot? Was he someone that gave you a lot of direction, or did he let you do your thing, unless he felt he needed to step in about something?

HARTNETT: I don’t know how he worked with the other actors. I had a lot of stuff that was on my own. I came in with a very specific idea of how I wanted to play Victor, and I think that’s why he wanted to hire me to begin with. He wanted a strong point of view. He left me to do what I wanted to do, but what was great about it, and this doesn’t always happen, was that he had done so much work on the technical side of things, to limit the amount of behind the scenes work that had to be done in between shots, so we were shooting close to the entire time. All of the stuff that I did in Bangkok, we shot in under two weeks. We were able to shoot take after take after take, and shot after shot, without any set up time ‘cause he just decided that he wasn’t gonna use lights. I don’t think I saw a light on this set, the entire time we were filming. It was all practical. And then, there was a bounce card, occasionally. And it was all hand-held and had this feeling of documentary filmmaking. In a way, it needed to be that way, with the budget that we had and the time that we had, and Daniel recognized that. He was a savvy enough filmmaker to understand that this was gonna happen in the performances, and he was able to get great performances from all of his actors, and a new type of character from Jim Gaffigan, and a great performance from Antoine [Olivier Pilon]. He worked hard with the actors, which was excellent. That’s what you want from a director.

You obviously like doing projects that are very different from each other, and you even did a Guy Ritchie action movie, with Cash Truck. What sort of atmosphere does he create on set? What did you like about working with him, as a filmmaker?

HARTNETT: I love Guy’s films. His early films were very quickly indoctrinated into the canon. He was such a big deal, in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, and has done such varied and wild work since then. He’s a wordsmith. He’s on set, constantly changing the dialogue. He wants to hear it said out loud. It feels very off the cuff, almost, but it’s basically him filtering everything on set, which is fantastic. In my opinion, that’s when filmmaking is at its best, when it’s coming from a point of view of a very strong director. I loved working on that film. I have no idea how my character is gonna turn it out, but I’m excited to see it.

You did, another series, with Paradise Lost. Is that something that will continue for another season?

HARTNETT: No, that’s not gonna continue. It was a limited series. Really, what happened there was that they sent two of the best scripts that I’ve ever read to us, and they were phenomenal, but they rushed into production without finishing the other eight scripts, and I was naive enough to think, “Oh, this is gonna be magnificent, throughout. It was a scramble for everyone and, unfortunately, it just didn’t quite come together. That’s a real problem with TV. I don’t think I’ll do another TV show, unless I’m really certain about the pedigree of the filmmakers and everything is worked out beforehand. Those first few scripts were on unbelievable. They were so layered and so textural, and they had so many different issues at play that felt current and important. And then, they couldn’t keep up with it. We started filming right away, and there was just too much to do.

You’ve previously talked about how you read a lot of scripts and that you enjoy reading scripts. When you read a script, do you always read it through to the end? Will you stop and put it down, if you know that it’s not something you’re interested in?

HARTNETT: Even if I’m not interested in it and the story’s great, I’ll read it, just because it’s a good piece of fiction. Part of it is natural curiosity because I like to write, as well, so I just wanna see what everyone else is writing, and part of it is professional. There might be something in one of these characters. A lot of what I’ve been lucky enough to do recently is dip into films that you wouldn’t necessarily expect me to be in, at least in a previous iteration of my career, and do some of my most fun work for myself. So, in order to find those roles, you have to read a lot of films.

When you say that you’re looking for stuff that you haven’t done or that people don’t expect you to do, is there a genre that you haven’t done, that you’d still like to do, but just haven’t found the right thing yet?

HARTNETT: There’s one thing, and it’s obvious to me, but now that I have kids, I really wanna make a film that they can see. I wanna do a voice in an animated movie. I really would love that.

It also seems like that would be a really safe way to work, in this new world that we’re all living in now.

HARTNETT: We’re starting back up on the production that we had shut down, at the beginning of the lockdown. Everything’s changed, but it’s still the same people. I got here yesterday (July 14th), to Paris, and we’re just getting started up on it again. It’s a very new world, making films now. The different departments are isolated in their own little groups, everyone’s wearing masks, everybody’s been tested for COVID, and everyone is supposed to be self-isolating while we’re making this. It’s an experiment. I think we’re the first production that’s up and running in France right now. We’ll see if it works, without people getting sick.

What are you shooting?

HARTNETT: It’s Raoul Peck’s next story. He did I Am Not Your Negro, a few years ago, and he did Lumumba, about Patrice Lumumba, which is phenomenal. He and I have known each other for a long time. We were gonna a movie together, 15 years ago, called Continental Drift, based on the Russell Banks book, and that ended up not coming together, for one reason or another, but we kept in touch. He has some narrative parts of this film (called Exterminate All the Brutes) that he needs to insert into what is mostly a personal viewpoint documentary about historical genocide in Western culture. It’s a very timely piece. And since we were just on the cusp of shooting it before the lockdown, he just needed to shot for three weeks. We’re just gonna try to get it done now, and hopefully he can release it. It’s a four-part series on HBO. Hopefully, that will be out by the end of the year.

You mentioned that you write yourself. Do you have scripts that you’re looking to get made, and do you write with yourself in mind?

HARTNETT: I never did write with myself in mind, but yeah, I’m looking to get them made. I sold a script when I was really young, looking back on it, at 22, to DreamWorks. It just sat on a very important shelf there, I’m sure, but it never went anywhere, and that was disheartening. I’ve written a few other things, with an eye towards making them, in some way, myself and producing them, in some way, but never with me as the lead actor, until the one that I’ve written most recently. We’re potentially gonna bring that up to a few people that we trust, and maybe at some point, get it made. We’ll see.

After a stratospheric rise to stardom in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Josh Hartnett settled down. Since then, much has been made of his escape from Hollywood and the roles he was allegedly offered and turned down. Much less has been made of the good work he did in smaller fare around that same time. Films like Paul McGuigan’s Wicker Park, Rod Lurie’s Resurrecting The Champ, and Austin Chick’s August come to mind––all underrated pictures that deserve a larger audience.

Over a decade later, Hartnett, now 42 years old (as of today, in fact), is more versatile than ever before. Following an impressive three-season run on the Showtime series Penny Dreadful and a slew of smaller films of wide-ranging genres, he now plays real-life journalist Victor Malarek in Daniel Roby’s Most Wanted. The film, arriving digitally this week, is based on the story of Alain Olivier and his illegal arrest in Thailand in the late 1980s. Hartnett’s character is crucial in exposing the corruption at the center of the law enforcement involved in the arrest, putting himself and his family in harm’s way as he digs deeper and deeper.

The Film Stage spoke to Hartnett about his latest performance, the benefits of portraying a real-life reporter, his journey to becoming a bonafide character actor, and some hidden gems in his career that are worth checking out.

The Film Stage: It’s been a busy year for you. You had Inherit The Viper in January and the television show [Paradise Lost on Spectrum] a few months back, now Most Wanted. These are all very different roles, very different characters. It has been exciting watching your career become both lead roles and character actor performances. What’s that journey been like?

Josh Hartnett: Yeah, I guess… it’s been something I’ve tried to do throughout my career but it’s only now starting to take hold in the way that I’m being perceived in the industry. Directors are sending me more and more characters of different types. For a long time it was a struggle to find roles like this. Even though I started [out choosing] anything that was different from the mainstream-type, leading roles––I started in independent films with roles that were more character-y. So it’s been in my career the whole time, though it’s only just starting to be viewed that way. But it’s fun for me to jump around and work with passionate directors on pieces that they’re really passionate about and they’ve been allowing me to create different types of characters.

It’s interesting you bring up indie movies from earlier on in your career. Watching Most Wanted, in which you play an investigative reporter, it did remind me of Resurrecting The Champ, an underrated movie you made over a decade ago, which has a journalistic aspect to it as well. Although they’re very different roles, when you revisit the same space as an actor do you reflect on maybe what’s changed in your process or what you’ve learned along the way?

Oh, everything is different now in the way that I approach characters than it was twelve years ago. As a young actor, I relied a lot on instinct and the research that I did was a lot of reading and a lot of getting to know people surrounding either the profession the character was in or the event that the character was going through. But it was all basically built in through my own experience and I was young, you know? I didn’t have that much experience yet! And as I’ve gotten more mature I have found that my own instincts for a character are sometimes not as interesting as I’d like the character to be. And I have become much more methodical in my approach and break characters down in a different way than I did before. The signatures will still be there for every actor. You are in your body, you can’t change that. But it definitely is a different approach for me.

In Most Wanted you’re playing a real-life person. How much of that in your preparation are you considering? It’s obviously not an imitation, right? But how much of that are you taking into your day-to-day?

A lot actually, because Victor [Malarek] was so available to me before the production and he was one of the big reasons why I wanted to do the film to begin with. I met with Daniel [Roby], the director, not long after he sent me the script and he told me why he thought I’d be good for it, but I was certain that there was more to it, because he was such a passionate guy. So obviously well-read on this subject and many subjects. And I felt like he had written something that was a distillation of a lot of events that he’d come across. But I wanted to know more about what this character was actually like at home, and luckily enough, he was like, ‘Well, why don’t you come up to Toronto and meet Victor?’ And so, I flew up––I was living in New York at the time – and we spent the day together. Victor showed me around The Globe and Mail [in Toronto]. I was able to meet former colleagues who had great stories about him. He took me to his old hangouts. We had lunch at his old favorite sandwich shop and I was able to talk to the owner of [the shop] about him. Then he took me to his house and I was able to meet his family.

And I started to view the character, not just as what I could learn on the page or what I could research, but he was fully three-dimensional standing in front of me. So my job was to square that idea of who he is with who he is on the page. And Daniel was dead-on in creating a really nice conflict because this was a time in Victor’s life where he was forced to think about something. He was always thinking about someone outside of himself, but he was compelled to do it. It was a calling, and he viewed himself as this crusader journalist and someone who would stop at nothing and feared nothing and all this stuff. But underneath that bravado was this actual fear. And the fear was that he would lose his family, that he would end up in a situation where they would be in harm’s way, but he didn’t recognize that yet. So he comes face-to-face with that in the first few minutes of the film. And I liked that this character has, for the first time in a long time, self-doubt about where he’s at and his place in the world, even though he’s in the middle of this very important story.

Definitely, there are a lot of different elements that work to make the character feel fully formed. It’s an unfortunately serendipitous, provocative time for this movie to come out, with everything going on in the world. It feels like the right time in the sense that it’s a movie about the idea of law enforcement and the potential abuses that can lend itself in that scenario.

Well, I will say that it’s sad that this event that took place in 1989 had as much relevance to Daniel when he picked it up in 2006, as it has to us now in 2020. Things just aren’t changing. What can you say about that? It’s why I think that this film, why I originally thought that this film, was so important to tell at the time that I first read it, which was five years ago. [It’s about] people who are speaking truth, journalists who are doing the research, and are working for an accredited newspaper, and are speaking to experts, and are creating full-fledged stories full of facts and are being undermined by people who are conspiracy theorists and quacks on the internet. That dilemma has been happening for such a long time and I felt like that was one reason why this was an important story to tell. And it’s only gotten worse, obviously, with the current administration and everything. So it’s unfortunate that it is such a universal issue and that it’s still happening now. It definitely is. I think it’s even more highlighted now, as you said.

A movie like this, there’s obviously a lot of passion behind it, and it’s not the smallest movie but it’s not a blockbuster either. And, honestly, this question is an excuse to highlight August, which is a movie that I love from 2008. Are there any other small movies of yours that you would recommend? These kinds of movies that, like you say, you’ve been making for a long time. Even something like Stuck Between Stations. Standouts that you would say, “Hey, if you like Josh Hartnett, there’s this movie you might not know about…”

Hey, I really appreciate you, first of all, having seen August and then liking it because that was another labor of love. These projects, nobody’s doing them to make a living, really. We all go and everybody takes time and effort and works as groups to make something that wouldn’t exist if we didn’t take that time and effort. And so, this film was small and it was not as small as August, and definitely not as small as Stuck Between Stations, but small enough to be able to pull off an international production with three intertwining storylines and it was originally a 180-page script. A very complex piece of material. You know, Daniel really outdid himself pulling this together. And I know he had to give up his fees and it took a lot of sacrifice, on his part, to make this work. I’m super proud of the work that he did. And it’s the same thing with August [and director] Austin Chick.

And I always felt this way, and I’m feeling it more and more every day, that the most important part of my job is finding passionate filmmakers who are working on a project that they really feel strongly about. And that was Austin for August. And he brought me right along into that world and it had the weirdest circumstances of release. And it was similar to what happened with this movie O that I did where we shot O and then Columbine happened and the movie had to be delayed for a long time. Because no one wanted to see that situation that takes place in our film. And August was the same thing. We shot the film and then the crash of 2008 happened and our film was about the dot-com crash in New York a few years previous. So it happened at a time that’s serendipitous, and this film is sort of happening that way too. It’s bizarre. It was in the air or something.

Yeah. It’s true. That’s interesting, actually.

So the answer to your question is, recently, I think, Oh, Lucy! is one that I really loved that I’ve made recently. I felt very lucky that Atsuko [Hirayanagi] came to me at the beginning because I don’t know why she came to me. No one comes to me to make comedies. And now, more so I’m getting more comedies, which I’m excited about, but it was not something that was coming my way. And it was such a compelling film and she’s such a tremendous filmmaker. And there have been a few peppered in there over the years. So there’s some sad cases too, like Mozart and the Whale, which was a fantastic Norwegian director named Petter Næss, his English-language debut, and it was such a great film shoot. The film itself was really well-made. And then, the producers of it took it away from him and re-edited it and put on a crappy soundtrack and made it into something that it just wasn’t in its DNA. And that happened with a couple of other films of mine. A movie called I Come With The Rain, that Tran Anh Hung directed. Same thing, that was literally taken away from him in court by the producers. And they edited something together that didn’t work. So you run a risk when you make independent films that there will be some bad actor who you don’t know is in the wings waiting to…

To manipulate it.

…yeah, manipulate it. But sometimes it really works out, like in this case, which I’m very proud of.

Well, hey, hopefully a couple of people seek out August and Oh Lucy! from this interview because those are worthwhile endeavors. I’ll end with just, what’s next for you? Obviously it’s a weird time for a “what’s next” question with everything going on.

Yeah, I finished a Guy Ritchie movie this [past] winter just before lockdown and it was such a great experience working with him. He works in a very independent fashion. He rewrites the dialogue on a moment-to-moment basis in order to shoot what his filter is saying that day is going to be funniest. That was wild because I have no idea what my character is going to be like in the final edit because only he knows what that movie is going to be like.

And then, I went to do this Raoul Peck, his next film after I Am Not Your Negro. And he has directed a documentary, it’s four-and-a-half hours long, and in it, he’s putting these narrative pieces and I’m the guy who’s in those narrative pieces. And we were just about to start filming into the Dominican Republic when we were sent home because they were going to close the borders. And then, we’ve spent four months in lockdown, and literally yesterday we were allowed to come to Paris to start back up but we’re only are shooting for a short time. Everybody’s isolating and doing the right thing and all the departments are isolated from each other, and we’ve all taken our tests. We’re going to try to finish it now, and so it could be out there because it’s a very important and timely piece as well. It’s about the history of Western genocide and filtered through Raoul’s personal perspective. So that’s what I’m doing right now.

Most Wanted arrives digitally on Friday, July 24.

<div class=""amp-bcp-top">
Now 41, Hartnett says he's proud of the time he took to find his voice and make his own decisions, "trying to make something of myself that wasn't just set up for me."

"I did take some time off, but I mostly took some time off to do other things, like raise my children," he adds. "I started to write a lot. I wrote a few scripts, wrote a few short music videos, and started producing."

"My relationship with Hollywood is what it has always been -- just me doing the thing that I want to do and try to make sure that I can do it. It's difficult to make movies in this industry if you're trying to make personal films. Luckily, I have been able to come in contact, especially recently, with a lot of filmmakers and people that are on board with hiring me to play the kind of roles I want to play. So I've been kind of lucky these days."

One of his most recent projects is Daniel Roby's Most Wanted, a crime thriller about the real-life story of a drug addict from Quebec who spent eight years in a Thai prison in the 1980s after he was set up in an espionage plot by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

"I'm from Minnesota, I'm from basically Canada, and I never heard anything about this," Hartnett says of the story. "This is such an interesting story of corruption and an obviously horrible thing that a young man went through. It just didn't crack into the news in the States at all. I was amazed at that, but then I met with the director and his passion for it was was so evident and he's so full of energy."

In the film, Hartnett stars as Canadian journalist Victor Malarek, who is tasked with investigating the complicated story, and the actor was able to meet with his real-life counterpart in preparation for the role.

"I flew up to Toronto and Victor showed me around all his old haunts," he recalls. "He showed me his old desk at the Globe and Mail, he showed me a bunch of people that he used to work with, and brought me to his old house and showed me pictures of his kids. That really gave me a sense of who he was at this point of his life, and I was just about to have my first child, and was just immediately like, 'I have to play this guy.'"

That sense of in-person connection meant he took extra care with the role. "I've played a few real-life people, and that pressure is there because you want to be-- It's twofold: You want to be good to the person you're playing, but you don't want to be too good. You want to be honest," he admits.

Hartnett says he received a "nice little note" from Malarek after he watched the film, but jokes, "We'll see what he thinks for real in his next book."

For now, the actor is prepping for his next project -- a Raoul Peck miniseries for HBO -- in Paris, and enjoying family time with his partner, Tamsin Egerton, and their three kids. "We're juggling a lot," he notes of life with three young children during quarantine, adding that he's appreciative of the fact that all of his kids are still too young for the stricter curriculum of home-schooling. "I feel lucky that we're able to just sort of enjoy our time together and not force them into these situations that are going to make the family dynamic sort of fall apart," he laughs.

And while his kids are still too young to appreciate most of his onscreen work, Hartnett admits he still has a soft spot for Pearl Harbor, which celebrates its 20th anniversary next year.

"What I loved about making the film is, we were in Hawaii making a historical, epic romance, and my grandfather and my great uncles were all World War II and I came fully prepared with all their letters and had all this sort of research into the time period," he recalls. "And then Michael Bay basically told me, 'What? Why are we talking about that? Go over here and run away from the explosion. Say your lines, dammit!' It was just, it was a different experience than what I expected it to be."

"I was young and naive, and now I get it a little bit more," he adds, though he admits being young and shooting in Hawaii wasn't a bad time at all. "We had a great time making the film. We were extraordinarily lucky making that film... All the actors were great, and yeah, I mean, it was an epic experience for sure."

Most Wanted is in theaters and on demand

Victor Malarek is the kind of journalist that doesn’t really exist anymore, but even when he was at the height of his powers, he remained a rare occurrence. Laying the groundwork, in a way, for modern gonzo journalism in the Vice mode, Malarek was a reporter at The Globe and Mail whose presence was so at the forefront of his work that it inspired a movie (Hey, Malarek!, starring Elias Koteas) and a TV show (Urban Angel) right around the time that the events of Daniel Roby’s new film Target Number One were occurring.

In Roby’s film, Victor Malarek (played by Josh Hartnett) is a principled, opinionated newspaper reporter who comes across the case of Daniel Léger (Antoine-Olivier Pilon), a Québécois heroin addict currently rotting in a Thai jail for heroin trafficking. The official line is that Léger is a kingpin controlling the drug trade, but what Malarek soon finds out is that he’s almost certainly a patsy, delivered through an informant (Jim Gaffigan) to government officials through less-than-legal means.

Target Number One has been a pet project of Roby’s for well over a decade — there are mentions of it in articles previewing Funkytown, which was shot in 2009 — and one that Josh Hartnett has been attached to for nearly as long.

“Daniel got in contact with me maybe six years ago,” says Hartnett, “and then I didn’t hear from Daniel for about a year. (laughs) The first financing deal fell through, actors fell through. It took a while to get the right group of people together, and then we finally finished the film about two years ago. It’s been a long journey for Daniel, for sure. When he sent me the script, it wasn’t about me being the lead in the film. It is an ensemble piece, 100 per cent.”

Victor Malarek is a central figure in Target Number One, but not its main character — he’s part of the tapestry of a surprisingly complex political thriller with shades of Oliver Stone and Michael Mann. To prepare for playing the part, Harnett met with the real Victor Malarek, who went on to host The Fifth Estate for a decade and now works as a senior reporter for CTV’s W-Five.

“Part of Victor’s charm is that he lets it all hang out,” says Hartnett. “His heart is on his sleeve, he tells you what he believes and he fights for it. It’s simple, it’s clear and he doesn’t let up. Most of the reason I wanted to do the film was, first of all, Daniel’s enthusiasm and the fact that the script was really interesting. But he invited me up to meet with Victor. I flew up to Toronto — I was living in New York at the time — and spent the day with Victor. Getting a sense of what he’s like, what drives him, was comforting. It was exciting to feel like you’re with someone who has an answer for themselves. That, I think, is his charm. He’s very certain of what Victor Malarek is about and what creates that star power that you’re talking about, that clarity of vision.”

An interesting nuance about the way Malarek is portrayed in the film is that, although he fits in many ways into the image of the rough-around-the-edges, truth-seeking reporter, he’s also someone concerned with the work and, ultimately, the paycheque that comes with it. In the idealized version of Target Number One, Malarek would be the kind of starry-eyed reporter for whom justice is payment enough — but, for Malarek, payment is the ultimate form of payment.

“That’s what made the story interesting,” says Hartnett. “He’s at a point in his life where it’s all changing. Victor is basically just going on his little journeys and getting the bad guys and thinking of himself as this vigilante journalist, but this is the point where things are changing for him. Suddenly, he’s gotta worry about his family and about his income — for the first time, he’s not the only one who doesn’t eat if he gets fired from all his jobs. It’s a transitional period in his life, which is what makes the character more compelling than just the cavalier, renegade journalist.”

Target Number One is also a period piece about what feels like the not-so-distant past (although it was three decades ago). Though Josh Hartnett is no stranger to appearing in period pieces throughout his career, this is the first “recent past” film he’s appeared in in some time.

“It frightens me, but I’m well past that now,” he says. “When I first heard Nirvana on a classic rock station, I wanted to jump off a bridge. (laughs) I’m 41 now, I’m used to it. Some of the movies that I was in are now being rediscovered by kids who weren’t born yet. It’s what happens, man. If you’re lucky enough, you get old.” ■https://cultmtl.com/2020/07/josh-hartnett-on-going-canadian-gonzo-in-target-number-one-daniel-roby-victor-malarek-canadian-journalist/
