I don't understand "August" final, the film don't finish good for Tom (josh hartnett) and... what about the woman? ¿ the woman who Tom love?

I like very much the movie but I don't understand the final.

I´m from germany as well, i got to see the movie. it´s really a great movie an amazing performance of josh. It´s about a dot.com company in august 2001, so one month before september 11.
