Do you feel it? Something bewitching is in the air, and the spirits of the dead beckon you toward Showtime. The demimonde is almost open once more, and with it comes a new array of ghoulish horrors to be faced by Miss Vanessa Ives and her broken fellowship of damaged anti-heroes.
Indeed, last season ended on a downer with everyone going their separate ways, and Penny Dreadful season 3 aims to make good on that grim promise since everything we've heard is about how each character finds themselves in a dark new place. And thanks to trailers, casting announcements, and all manner of rumors and innuendo, we have plenty to already glean and speculate on from a new year of fresh Victorian hell. So join us as we explore everything to know about this season of Penny Dreadful.
It's time for the Dreadfuls to gathering their belongings and to head west since Showtime announced today that production on Penny Dreadful Season 3 is taking an American turn... by way of Spain! That's right pilgrim, in the grand tradition of Sergio Leone and other Italian maestros of the Spaghetti Western subgenre, Penny Dreadful is finally crossing the pond to explore Ethan Chandler's (Josh Hartnett) blood soaked history by shooting in Spain.
The shoot will be in the city of Almería and in the Andalusia region to be exact (near where Game of Thrones has also held production shoots). This will be done as part of "select episodes" that focus on Hartnett's aforementioned Chandler and Timothy Dalton's Sir Malcolm Murray, who "will battle dark forces in the 1800s American West." More intriguing still is that they will be joined by new series regular Kaetenay (Wes Studi) and the returning Sarah Greene as Hecate.
Previously, we knew that Kaetenay would cross paths with Malcolm Murray, who begins the season traveling to Africa in order to return Sembene's body to its homeland. But it sounds like they are detouring to the last vestiges of the Wild West in order to join forces with Chandler. Also, while season 2 set up Hecate's return, for it to be announced so early and that she would play a part in Ethan's journey leaves fans with much to speculate upon. One still wonders what Ethan's father (will they call him John Talbot, perhaps?) will make of all this, assuming Ethan ever makes his original destination.
During the TCA Winter Tour, Showtime announced that Penny Dreadful season 3 will premiere on Sunday, May 1 at 9pm, which is par for the course for a series that has premiered in early May every year for the past several seasons.
