Penny Dreadful will be back for a third series

Sky Atlantic has commissioned another run of the eerie drama, starring Josh Hartnett, Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green

Series two of Penny Dreadful has yet to finish on Sky Atlantic but that hasn't stopped the channel from ordering a third series of the gothic drama.

Sky has officially confirmed that an order for new episodes of the drama – starring Billie Piper, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green – has been put in.

The British-American production follows characters based upon icons of 19th-century Irish and British fiction, including Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, Mina Harker and Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Victor Frankenstein and his monster from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) have been forming a deeper bond in series two as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and the Creature (Rory Kinnear) are waging battles of their own.

Fans will be delighted to hear that there's no room for even more mystical drama to unfold.

“Penny Dreadful is the perfect fit for Sky Atlantic; truly international in scale and ambition but with a raft of British talent at its core, and filmed in the Republic of Ireland" , Zai Bennett, the channel's Director, said. "I’m thrilled to have the series returning to the channel, and to once again be partnering with John Logan and continuing to work with our good friends at Showtime.”

John Logan & Patti Smith To Adapt 'Just Kids' As Showtime Limited Series

Penny Dreadful creator John Logan is expanding his relationship with Showtime. In a competitive situation, the pay cable network has acquired the rights to Patti Smith’s memoir, Just Kids, for a limited series to be co-written and produced by Smith and Logan. The limited series will be to be produced with Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions.

Just Kids is one of my favorite memoirs of all time,” said David Nevins, President of Showtime Networks Inc. “Not only is it a fascinating portrait of artists coming of age, but it’s also an inspiring story of friendship, love and endurance. I’m so thrilled that Patti Smith will bring her unique voice to writing the scripts along with the gifted John Logan, who has been doing such a phenomenal job with Penny Dreadful for us.”

Smith and Logan have been working on an adaptation of Smith’s 2010 National Book Award-winning memoir since 2011, after Smith saw Logan’s Tony Award-winning play Red, a bio-play about painter Mark Rothko. Just Kids chronicles Smith’s early, heady days in New York with lover-turned-friend Robert Mapplethorpe, the controversial photographer who, among many other works, shot the classic portrait of Smith for her seminal 1975 “Horses” album.
