WITH JOSH HARTNETT

Horror and crime have appealed to Josh Hartnett since his first crime drama when he was 19. He chats with us about his role as Ethan in Penny Dreadful, the British-American horror TV series that’s beginning its second season, and reveals that even he doesn’t always know what’s in store for his character.

Penny Dreadful Season 2 screens on SoHo on Tuesdays from 5th - 8.30pm.

Have you been surprised by the very positive fan and critical reaction to the show?
Well, I just bet on the people involved, you know. I only had two episodes when I signed on, but I didn’t think that (creator) John Logan was going to write something that was not engaging. And he has a great track record.

Now that you’ve had a season to get to know Ethan, what do you like about playing him?
What do I like about him? Well, I like that Ethan is sort of a bottomless well so far. I mean, I am 18 episodes in and I still don’t think I know his backstory, precisely. When John and I first sat down, he said to me he obviously is going to be werewolf. But aside from that I have a vague notion of who I think he should be, but we’re going to have to come up with that. And so I made a few choices, a few things that have made some significant effect on where the character has come to at this point. And now next season, you know, we will get into his origins. And I think we are not even going to get into his deep, deep origins.

Is part of that his father?
Part of it is his father. Part of it’s how he became this type of shape-shifting creature. And a part of it’s his relationship to religion and a part of it is his knowledge of himself prior to becoming this shape-shifting creature. And a part of it is his age and a part of it is – I mean there are a million things that go into what Ethan could be. And that’s what’s nice about him, he is not – some of the characters are laden in a certain way with our expectations of them. My character, because he was set up as such an open – it was such an open sort of platform, we can explore a lot more.

You knew from the beginning that Ethan is a werewolf. Was it fun to tease that before the reveal? Were you happy the way that worked out?
It was fun. You know, for me it was about inflicting the character with just enough – he’s not aware obviously, exactly of what he is. He knows he has blackouts. He knows that there are murders committed when he blacks out. He assumes it’s him. But the wolf iconography or imagery was something that I don’t think Ethan needed to be aware of. But as an actor I thought it would be fun to play with some of the wolf-like characteristics of the character. And did they predate or did he create this situation for himself? I mean, the question that John has brought up so many times or that we’ve talked about together is whether this is the result of a bite or if this is the result of some sort of Native American shape-shifting skin walker myth.

In Season 1, the group is pursuing something, which comes to a head at the end of the season. And now it feels like they are individually being pursued. Can you tease us a little bit about that in Season 2? What does that mean for the group?
The hunters become hunted and all that? Yeah it’s – what does it mean for the group? It means coming together and a separation if that’s being entirely opaque with an answer. Factions are created amongst the group.

Some actors like to know the whole story arc for the season and get every script if they can. What’s your take on that? Do you prefer to be surprised?
No, I would much, much, much rather have everything laid out beforehand. I’ve always been that way since I read the first script I ever was considered for when I was 17 years old. I thought, how could you possibly do television where they are changing a character constantly because this leads to this, this leads to this, leads to this. And then when I got on this show, I’ve seen how my performance can actually have an effect on the direction of the character. Conversations that John and I have or John just seeing what I’ve done or seeing the way that other people have reacted to me or just knowing me has affected somewhat radical change on what the character will become. It is an interesting process.

Are you as excited as the fans are, to understand what’s going to happen with Ethan?
Oh, yeah, because I am the one that has to play him, you know. Like I’d better be excited by it, otherwise, you know, how can anybody else be?

Does it help the excitement that you are in wonderment in the same way that the fans are?
Somewhat. Still, there’s a give and take. I mean, I think my job is still to push John to tell me more. And his job is to reveal in the increments that he believes are most beneficial to the show. So, I at the beginning of the season requested all 10 scripts. He gave me 8 of the 10 and he held back the last two for months. And I found out why afterward, but it’s his show and he is running it the way that he sees fit. If it were up to me, I would have a full synopsis of my character from here to the end of time. I think that I could do along with that. But just being a part of this in this capacity has been interesting. It’s been a real challenge. It’s been fun actually.

Are the fans going to be satisfied to see what happens with Ethan by the end of Season 2?
Yes, very satisfied. They will be very, very satisfied with what happens to Ethan over the course of this season. This is a big season for Ethan. It’s not the season. There are elements that remain unresolved that are very important to who Ethan will become and that’s fun as well, like I said earlier. There’s a lot to be revealed, but you get a lot more this season of what Ethan really is. And you just get a lot more of Ethan, because last season in order to pull off the trick of not letting people guess very easily that he was a werewolf, we had to hide a lot of who Ethan was. And Ethan showed up in a sort of functional capacity a lot of the time as our eyes and ears as an American in this world, as a guy that doesn’t seem to have the information that some of the other characters have. That’s done. Now we can follow Ethan, we can get to know him and so for me, I knew that if we only went one season, I would be terribly disappointed in the character I was able to play. Now that we’ve done two seasons, I am very happy with what I've been able to do with Ethan and we will see from here on out, because I know from what I hear about Season 3 from John, it’s going to even grow it more. So, it’s exciting.
